Training Tips
WARNING!
Consult you Doctor before starting any exercise program. Always wear the
Achilles Speed shoes on a smooth, dry and
flat surface to prevent injury. Start slowly! Rest as long as necessary
between drills! (Rest the legs from working in our shoes by placing your
heels on a 2 inch high curb or board between drills. This keeps heels off
the ground to relax legs.) The object of these drills is speed, not
conditioning! You will get in top condition and resting time will shorten.
Train 15 to 20 minutes a day for 3 days a week during the off-season.
Maintain the speed, strength and skills you gain by training during the
season 10 to 15 minutes a day at least two days a week. More is not better!
Do not over train or re-invent the wheel by changing the drills! Coach Doug
Merchant eliminated many good drills and settled on the best ten for
increasing speed and strength. Weights and other drills might compliment the
Achilles Speed shoes and program but nothing can replace it. Do not
buy our shoes and program if you are not dedicated and willing to train as
directed.

Tips for
Speed Training
1.
Never stretch or exercise cold muscles! Do our warm up drills before
beginning our program.
2. The GOAL of Achilles Speed shoes and program is SPEED. Injury
prevention occurs because we rapidly increase all other sports skills. There
are two warm up and nine speed drills of our program. When you can do them
all perfectly in 15 minutes or less you will run as fast as you body
structure and age allow.
3. Speed is made up of the START, RECOVERY, ACCELERATION and VELOCITY
stage of sprinting.
4. Speed is about running NOT starting. We teach a quick start for
the single purpose of getting to the final “velocity” stage of sprinting.

5. You lose strength over a long season if you stop lifting weights.
Maintain the speed you gain by training at least 15 minutes a day for two
days a week during your season. Why work hard in the off-season to lose a
step during the critical season of your sport?
6. Concentrate on foot speed of movement and power in all drills.
Land on the ball of the foot NOT on the toes and roll forward with a full
range and powerful planter flex motion.
7. Over speed training in drill 10 of our program is where you put
all the fundamentals together. This 110 yard sprint is a combination of
sprinting and conditioning. Conditioning is not our “Goal” but it will
occur. (When athletes are used to our program “conditioning” drills in
practice won’t be necessary.)
8. Shock, rest and recovery. DO NOT OVER TRAIN & HAVE FUN! Train for
15 to 20 minutes a day for 3 days a week. REST as long as necessary to do
our drills correctly! (Rest the feet and legs when working in our shoes by
placing the heels on a 2 x 4 or 2” high curb.) If you are not doing a drill
correctly work on it until you get it right. Do NOT go to the next drill.

9. Coach Doug Merchant says, “It is much easier to teach an athlete
with playing skills to run fast than it is to teach playing skills to a fast
athlete”.
